How to Set Up IPTV on an LG Smart TV (webOS)

An LG set handles this natively through webOS, so nothing needs plugging into the back of it. Two things are worth knowing before you begin. First, LG’s store carries several players and they are not equally good — one is free and adequate, the others cost a few pounds and are noticeably nicer to live with. Second, the store is also full of deliberate near-copies with names one letter away from the real thing. Read the app names in step two carefully. Beyond that this is a ten-minute job, and the coloured buttons on an LG remote make the finished result genuinely pleasant. Worth knowing which webOS generation you are on before you begin, because it decides your options. Sets from 2016 to 2018 will run IPTV Smarters but can feel slow with a long list. Sets from 2019 onward handle any of these comfortably. Anything older is running Netcast, which cannot install these players at all — check that first and save yourself the search.

Before you start

  • LG webOS TV from 2016 or newer
  • LG account signed in
  • Stryvix4K M3U link or Xtream login

Nothing to sign in with yet? Open a 24-hour trial and the desk sends credentials in minutes, or choose a plan.

Working through it

  1. Open the LG Content Store

Press Home on the remote, open the LG Content Store, move across to Apps and use the search field. On older webOS versions the store is slower to respond than you expect, so give it a moment before deciding a search has failed.

    Get credentials first

  2. Install a player

Search for IPTV Smarters Player, iPlayTV or GSE Smart IPTV. Smarters is free; the other two carry a small one-off price and better interfaces for it. Do not install anything called TiviMato or Tivimax — those are not TiViMate, they are opportunistic copies, and TiViMate does not exist on webOS at all.

  3. Enter your Stryvix4K details

Smarters wants Login with Xtream Codes API followed by the username, password and server address exactly as sent. Smart IPTV takes a different route entirely: it shows a MAC address on screen, and you submit your M3U link against that MAC at siptv.app/mylist from a phone or laptop. Note the MAC down before you walk away from the television.

  4. Watch

Once the app restarts, the box loads the full line-up with its built-in guide. The coloured buttons on the LG remote handle favourites and the EPG directly, and that is the part that makes these sets pleasant rather than merely workable. Spend a few minutes marking favourites now.

When it goes wrong, and what fixes it

The stream is a black screen but the sound plays

That is a decoder mismatch, not a dead channel, and it is the most common LG complaint we see. Switch the player to native or hardware decoding in the app settings. If that does not do it, select the lower-bitrate copy of the same channel — one exists for most sports feeds.

The app is missing from the LG store

LG varies its catalogue by region and by webOS version. IPTV Smarters is the most widely stocked, so try that first. On sets older than roughly 2016 the store may carry none of them, in which case a cheap stick into the HDMI port is the realistic answer.

Smart IPTV says the playlist has expired

The message refers to the app, not your subscription. Reinstalling the app or resetting the television clears its stored list, so upload the M3U again at siptv.app/mylist against the same MAC address. Nothing has happened to your account.

The picture stutters only in the evening

Capacity somewhere between you and us is under load. Try the HD copy rather than the 4K one first. If the set is on Wi-Fi, a cable makes more difference on LG hardware than on most, because the built-in wireless is modest. Still bad? Message the desk while it is happening rather than the next morning.

Favourites disappear after a firmware update

webOS updates occasionally reset app data. Favourites live inside the player rather than in your account, so they do not survive that. Re-marking them takes a couple of minutes, and there is unfortunately no way to back them up on this platform.

The app launches to a blank white screen

Almost always a partially failed install rather than a login problem. Remove the app completely, restart the television from the power menu rather than standby, and install it again. Two minutes, and it clears this reliably.

Audio is out of sync with the picture

Usually the television’s own processing rather than the stream. Turn off any picture-enhancement or motion-smoothing mode, and if you use a soundbar, set the audio output to PCM. Both add delay that the player cannot compensate for.

The player is present but will not open after a webOS update

A major webOS update occasionally leaves an app in a half-migrated state. Removing and reinstalling from the LG Content Store clears it, and your credentials go straight back in. Do this rather than resetting the whole television, which is a far bigger job for the same result.

What to run on this hardware

Stuck anywhere on your LG Smart TV?

Send the desk a photo of the screen and someone will talk you through it. Plans start at $15 a month for the full 25,000+ channels, with credentials issued under 15 minutes.

LG Smart TV IPTV FAQ

Which IPTV app works best on LG TVs?

IPTV Smarters Player if you want free and functional. iPlayTV if you would rather pay a small amount once and have something that feels properly designed. Both take the same Xtream login, so trying one and moving to the other costs nothing but the download.

Does this work on older LG sets running Netcast?

Generally no. Netcast predates the current store and cannot install these players. If your set is older than about 2016, plug in a Fire TV Stick or an Android box and follow that guide instead — the television becomes a screen and everything else works normally.

Can I get the programme guide on LG?

Yes, provided you log in with the Xtream Codes option rather than a plain M3U playlist. The guide arrives with your login. If yours is blank, that is nearly always because the playlist route was used instead.

Is there recording on webOS?

No, not through any of these players. webOS does not grant them the storage access required. If recording matters, an Android box running TiViMate Premium into the same television is the only dependable route.

Will a soundbar or AV receiver cause problems?

Occasionally, with audio formats the player passes through untouched. If a channel is silent through the soundbar but audible through the television speakers, change the audio output to PCM in the set’s sound settings, which forces the television to do the decoding.

Which webOS versions does this cover?

Broadly 2016 onward, which is when the LG Content Store gained these players. Earlier Netcast sets cannot install them, and a cheap stick is the sensible answer there.

Do the coloured remote buttons do anything useful?

They do, and it is one of the nicer things about LG hardware here — they map to favourites and the guide inside most players. Worth five minutes learning, because it is considerably faster than navigating the menus.

Does the LG Magic Remote work well with these players?

The pointer is genuinely useful on long channel lists, faster than stepping with a directional pad. The scroll wheel doubles as a select button, which is worth knowing because it is the quickest way to move through a guide.
